Position Summary:
Creates, builds, and strengthens relationships with individuals and community partners with the goal of
securing major gifts, developing new funds, encouraging additional gifts to existing funds, and
promoting the wide variety of deferred giving opportunities. Supports, builds, and cultivates
relationships with primary contacts, prospects and professional advisors. Promotes charitable giving
with an emphasis on providing education on the importance of unrestricted giving. Leads the
engagement, education and communication strategies for Donor Advisors in alignment with the
Community Foundation’s mission, vision, and key organizational values of diversity, equity, inclusion,
and anti-racism.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Leadership and Strategic Planning
 Leads the Donor Advisor Engagement Program.
 Assists in formulating new ideas, marketing strategies and system changes that help the Community
Foundation achieve its overall mission and objectives, especially in the areas of fund development,
donor development, and donor education

 Designs and implements individual plan(s) for identifying and building relationships with primary
contacts, prospects and professional advisors and nonprofit organizations
Outreach, cultivation and stewardship of donors and potential donors
 Cultivates current donors, prospects and professional advisors by providing education on the
Community Foundation and charitable giving
 Solicits donors and prospects for major gifts in support of key initiatives
 Manages a portfolio of approximately 200 donors, professional advisors, and prospects
 Assists, as needed, in the development and implementation of donor and community partner
appreciation and recognition programs and awards
 Participates in creation of feedback mechanisms that provide the Community Foundation with an
accurate picture of the needs and perceptions of primary contacts, professional advisors, and
prospects
Interacts with external and internal customers
 Represents the Community Foundation at key community events and may, from time to time,
participate as an active member and/or board member of nonprofit community organizations and
service clubs throughout the Community Foundation’s geographic area
 Maintains accurate contact report records and personal profiles in Customer Relations Management
system
 Participates in the development and maintenance of processes and procedures that will equip staff
members with tools that enable them to provide effective and efficient service
 Maintains internal engagement with all KZCF functional areas to assure foundation-wide synergies
 Serve on cross functional planning and leadership teams which may include but not limited to
Marketing/Communications+, the Anti-Racism Transformation Team, affinity groups and more
 Performs other related duties as identified by the Vice President, Donor Relations

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Required:
 Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of training and relevant work experience
 Three to five years of progressively more responsible relationship management experience in the
following areas: Not-for-profit, education, public sector, philanthropy, or business; or a combination
of two or more sectors
 Excellent verbal and written communication skills
 Ability to relate to diverse groups of people and professionals in a variety of fields and a broad range
of constituencies
 Aptitude to work both independently and as a team member
 Must have the ability, judgment, poise, and personal capabilities to build and maintain trust.
 Superb customer service experience
 In-depth knowledge/understanding of computers including general business software (i.e.,
Microsoft Office 365).
 Ability to gain the confidence and respect of donors and professional advisors as well as community
foundation colleagues
 Ability to work effectively one-on-one as well as make formal presentations to large groups

Preferred:
 Knowledge of Kalamazoo County nonprofit sector
 Major gift fundraising experience
 Estate or financial planning background
 A broad and diverse knowledge of community issues and demographics with a strong individual network.
 Working knowledge of community foundations and an understanding of charitable giving
opportunities and strategies
Physical/Mental Requirements:
 While working virtually, must ensure remote environment has consistent access to high-speed
internet, generally free from distractions.
 Work in well-lit, pleasant, smoke-free office.
 Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
 Frequent requirement to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and
arms
 Frequently involves extended workdays and periodically involves irregular work hours.
 Regular group and public speaking.
 Occasional travel and/or overnight work schedules.
 Requires attention to detail and ability to concentrate on figures, paperwork, data, etc.
 Frequent pressures related to meeting deadlines and fulfilling scheduling requirements.
 Frequent distracting influences such as people, phone calls, noise and so forth.
 Frequent simultaneous handling of multiple tasks and intermittent or cyclical work pressures.
 Occasionally requires on-call availability to handle work problems, emergencies/crisis situations etc.
 Occasional work at multiple sites or travel.
