This week’s Member Spotlight is on Consumers Energy.
Consumers Energy is the second largest utility company in Michigan that provides services for 6 million Michigan residents. The company also has strong historical roots in Michigan’s rural communities dating back to 1927 when it put in its first 7 miles electrical line in rural areas. That number was up to over 10,000 miles of line by the end of 1937. In 1939 the organization became the first organization in the nation to serve 100,000 farms.
Today, Consumers serves more than 30,000 Michigan farmers, more than any other utility in the state. For these agricultural customers, Consumers offers free electrical and stray voltage tests. They will also aid farmers in the planning process of expanding their operations so that safe and efficient measures will be installed to met the increased demand for power.
Consumers is also a great resource for Economic Development services, especially for small towns and rural areas. The department has organized a great compilation of information from leading experts in topics like asset mapping, economic gardening and supporting local entrepreneurs – issues very important to small towns and rural areas. This mindset along with their expertise in many areas make Consumers a unique organization that can bundle their services to fit the needs of any organization or community.
