Charlotte Smith, LISC – Michigan Statewide, (Kalamazoo) – At-large
Charlotte J. Smith is Deputy Director of Michigan Statewide LISC where she assists managing the administrative operations of LISC offices in Kalamazoo and Flint. Prior to joining LISC in December 2017, Charlotte served as the Deputy Director for Community Services at the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department. In that role, she was responsible for overseeing agencies and programs that make up the community services divisions of the county health department, including: Health Equity; Maternal and Child Health; Veterans Services; Area Agency on Aging; and the Community Action Agency. Earlier in her career, she spent 18 years at the State of Michigan’s Office of Children’s Ombudsman (OCO), including service as Acting Director. The OCO is a watchdog agency that investigates social workers’ handling of child abuse, foster care, adoption, and juvenile justice cases and recommends legislative and policy changes aimed at improving the child welfare system. Charlotte has served on the boards of many municipal commissions and community organizations. She earned a law degree from the University of Akron (Ohio) College of Law and a bachelor’s degree in Public Policy and Government from Eastern Connecticut State University.
